Shoulder pads are a vital piece of equipment that can protect ringette players from serious injuries. According to a recent study by the University of Calgary, shoulder pads can reduce the risk of shoulder fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue injuries by up to 80%. These injuries can have long-term consequences for the health and well-being of young athletes, as well as affect their participation and enjoyment of the sport. Based on this evidence, on August 21, 2024, Edmonton Ringette Board of Directors voted to mandate shoulder pads at all levels of youth ringette (AS to U19). This decision is aligned with the science on injury prevention and mitigation, and with our goal of keeping our athletes safe.
Shoulder pads must be designed specifically for ringette or hockey, and must cover the entire shoulder area, including the collarbone, sternum, and shoulder blades. They must also have adequate padding and fit properly. Padded t-shirts are not an acceptable alternative to protective shoulder pads, as they do not provide sufficient coverage or cushioning. Players who do not wear shoulder pads will not be allowed to participate in any ringette activities, including practices, games, tournaments, and camps. Coaches and team staff will be responsible for enforcing this rule.
Shoulder pads must be worn by all Spring 3v3 Division 1, 2, and 3 players, regardless of the association you play for in winter. 3v3 Spring Ringette is a sanctioned Edmonton Ringette league, and the Mandatory Shoulder Pad Policy applies to all players playing in the spring league.
On August 21, 2024, the Edmonton Ringette Board of Directors voted to approve a mandatory shoulder pad policy that will be effective immediately. For more information please see Edmonton Ringette's Mandatory Shoulder Pad Policy.

We hope that this policy will help prevent injuries and promote a safe and fun environment for our ringette community.
